Cairo Airport Car Rental
The moment of landing in Cairo has arrived. Hot weather, thousands of years of history, and chaos in the city. When I first set foot in Cairo, all I had in mind was the majestic silhouette of the pyramids. If you love freedom like I do, you know you need a rental car to get around the city comfortably. Don't be intimidated by the chaotic traffic you'll encounter as soon as you leave the airport. There are so many places to discover in this mysterious city with a rental car. You can rent a car right at Cairo Airport to explore the breathtaking city of pyramids, pharaohs, and thousands of years of history.
Car Hire Companies Inside Cairo Airport Terminal Building
Cairo Airport has offices for both international and local car rental companies. When you land at Cairo International Airport, you can see the car rental companies' offices in the corridors right next to the baggage carousel. These companies include both international giants and local brands. Car rental offices are located on the Arrivals level of each terminal. Cairo Airport has 3 terminals. Most car rental companies are located in Terminal 3.
Budget, Sixt, Avis, Europcar, Elwefak ElMasreya for Tourism, and Adam for Car Rent operate at Cairo Airport. If you have made an online reservation, your reservation confirmation will include the pick-up address and terminal information for your company. If you choose major brands like Hertz and Avis, it will be easier to find solutions to any problems you may encounter. I usually prefer to rent cars from international companies. However, local companies also offer very attractive prices.
Car Hire Companies Off-site Outside Cairo Airport
The city of Cairo is a major destination that welcomes travelers from all over the world. Therefore, there are offices of many international car rental companies in the city center. Companies such as Avis, Budget, Sixt, and Europcar have branches both at the airport and in the city. When making a reservation, you can select the city center office as your pick-up location. Below are the car rental companies and their addresses in downtown Cairo.
Avis: 7 El-Nozha St., Saudi Co. Building, Nasr City, Cairo 11586.
Budget: 7 El-Nozha St., Saudi Co. Buildings, Nasr City, Cairo.
Sixt: City Star Gate 6, Unit 2220, Omar Ibn El Khattab Street, Nasr City, Cairo 11737.
Europcar: 14 Misr El Taamer, Area 9, Heliopolis, Cairo.

Cairo Airport Online Car Rental
When you arrive in Cairo, if you want to explore this historic city right away, you can rent your car online before boarding your flight. If you rent a car online before starting your trip, you will eliminate the stress you might experience at the airport and rent your car at a more affordable price. Remember, in destinations with high tourist traffic like Egypt, last-minute car rental prices can be very expensive. I make my reservation at least 3-4 weeks in advance.
A few tips to keep in mind when making an online reservation:
Pick-up location: Cairo International Airport (CAI).
Pick-up date and time.
Drop-off location and time.
Your age. Most car rental companies have a minimum age requirement of 21.
Choose the vehicle that best suits you from the vehicle categories. Cars like the Nissan Sunny are fuel-efficient. These cars have high maneuverability in the city. If you are traveling with your family, you can choose an SUV. SUVs are perfect for desert roads.
Be sure to read the rental conditions, insurance options, fuel policy, and mileage limits. I especially recommend that you take out comprehensive insurance. Thanks to comprehensive insurance, you will have a more comfortable driving experience in chaotic traffic like Cairo.
Especially during the peak season, between March and May and September and November, rental car prices are very high. With early booking, you can rent a car at a discount of 30% to 40%. One of the biggest problems with last-minute reservations is that there are limited vehicles available in certain categories. The vehicle group you want may be full for last-minute reservations. With early booking, you can rent the type of vehicle you want. When your reservation is ready, you won't have to wait in line to rent a car at the airport. You can complete your transactions more quickly.
Required documents:
Passport.
Your national driver's license.
IDP. An International Driving Permit is required to drive in Egypt.
Credit card.
Reservation confirmation.
Peak Seasons in Cairo: When Should You Make a Reservation?
Cairo is very crowded almost all year round. It is even more crowded during the spring and fall months.
Peak Seasons: High Prices and High Demand
Spring: Spring is the most beautiful season in Cairo. Between March and May, temperatures range from 25-30°C. These temperatures are ideal for visiting the pyramids. Therefore, most tourists visit Cairo during this period. Car rental demand is very high during these months.
Autumn: Autumn is Cairo's second most popular season. After the summer heat, the weather cools down. The weather is ideal for city tours. If you want to rent a car during this period, I recommend making a reservation at least 4-6 weeks in advance.
Mid Season
Winter: Winter months are cool in Cairo. Temperatures range from 10-20°C between December and February. Prices are reasonable during this period.
Low Season: Best Prices
Summer: Temperatures range from 35-40°C between June and August. The weather is not very suitable for outdoor activities during this period. The number of tourists decreases during this period, and car rental prices are at their lowest level of the year.
I visited Cairo in April. I made my car reservation 3-4 weeks in advance. Large vehicles are not advantageous in Cairo traffic. On the contrary, these types of vehicles are disadvantageous. A small and economical car both reduces your fuel costs and allows you to move comfortably in narrow streets. Models such as the Nissan Sunny or similar are more affordable. The full-to-full policy is usually the most advantageous option. The company delivers the vehicle to you with a full tank, and you return the vehicle with a full tank.
When booking online, include comprehensive insurance and glass and tire insurance in your reservation. Insurance at the airport is more expensive.
Driving in Egypt: What You Need to Know
Cairo traffic is chaotic and lawless in the truest sense of the word. I was shocked when I first drove in Cairo. But after a few hours, I got used to these rules. Horn use is quite common. The major roads in the city center are in good condition. Road quality is poor in rural areas.
Traffic rules exist in theory in Cairo, but not in practice. Horns are constantly blaring, and cars change lanes suddenly. Motorcycles can appear in front of you from anywhere. Always be aware of your surroundings. Finding parking in central Cairo is difficult. Use hotel parking lots or opt for paid parking lots.
Street lighting in Cairo is inadequate in some areas. Be extra careful if you have to drive at night. Major roads, such as the Cairo-Alexandria highway, are in good condition. However, there are potholes on some regional roads. Drive carefully, especially on desert roads.
Places to Visit in Cairo with a Rental Car
Giza Pyramids and Sphinx: This is Cairo's most iconic spot. It is about 45 minutes from the airport. If you go early in the morning, you can explore the Pyramids more comfortably without the crowds. Parking is paid.
Cairo Museum-Tahrir Square: The richest collection of ancient Egyptian treasures is displayed in this museum. There is paid parking next to the museum.
Han el-Halili Bazaar: This is a traditional Egyptian bazaar. Spices and handmade souvenirs are sold in the bazaar. Drive carefully in the narrow streets around the bazaar. Parking is difficult to find. My advice is to park your car at a nearby hotel and walk here.
Sakkara and Memphis: Sakkara, home to the Step Pyramid, and the ancient capital of Memphis. This is 30 km south of Cairo. Road conditions are good.
Dahshur Pyramids: The Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid are located here. There are no excessive crowds of tourists here.
Alexandria: Alexandria is a historic port city on the Mediterranean coast. You can reach it comfortably by highway.
